Drones, Quads and Helis

Show:

What most people refer to as a "Drone" is a Quadcopter, usually with a camera attached. There are broadly five types of quad:

1: Basic quads - these don't have a camera but are capable of indoor flight. Generally these retail for less than £40.

2: Upgradable quads - these don't have a camera but have sockets allowing accessories to be fitted - a good example being the Ares Shadow, which has sockets to add a camera, a winch and a water blaster at a later date. These can be flown outside on still days, as can the following types.

3: Video quads - These are the most popular for filming from the air. A larger model that has a high resolution camera installed. The most popular one of these in our range at present is the Ares Recon. This model features an HD video camera meaning video you shoot will be in sharp definition on either a computer or a HD television.

4: FPV quads - FPV stands for "First Person View". These have a small screen on the handset which shows the view from the camera mounted on the quad or in some cases use a smartphone for the same feature. It should be noted that whilst FPV quads do record video, they tend to record at a lower definition when compared to a dedicated Video quad. Please note - it is illegal in the UK to fly a FPV model when the model is out of the line of sight of the pilot.

5: Racing quads - these have an airborne controllability that is closer to that of a model car or model plane and therefore can be flown through obstacles and in tighter spaces. Examples of these are (at the low end) the Ares Shadow and at the high end the Kyosho Drone Racer.

Where possible we have added the manufacturer's video to each product. Obviously the manufacturers fly their models in the best possible conditions with skilled pilots, but they give a good idea of what you can do.

Due to European Regulations, all Quads are considered unsuitable for under 14s. We cannot suggest otherwise, but you can make your own decision as to who might fly these models.
