A word about BACHMANN: Bachmann sets are completely track, power supply and coupling compatible with Hornby sets, you can mix the two brands of track (in fact, under some lights you can even see the word HORNBY on the back of the Bachmann track!) and the locos/wagons on the Bachmann sets are all full detail. As a result these sets are excellent value when compared with the equivalent Hornby, so make just as good a starter set and are ideal to add to an existing Hornby layout.

Hornby R1144 LMS TPO Mail Train Set With Working Maildrop £79 Drop and pick up your mail bags whilst recreating the 50's mail system Before the development of the British motorway system millions of letters were shipped from town to town by railway. Many of these mail trains travelled at night and included a TPO (Travelling Post Office) coach in which bags of letters and small parcels were collected, sorted and then dropped off in bags at the relevant stations along the route. This set not only includes an eye catching 0-6-0 locomotive but also a TPO and support brake coach. The 'net' projects from the coach to scoop the mailbag from the trackside pick-up hook. The bag is then automatically ejected into the trackside receiving bin at the place of delivery. DIGITAL Hornby & Bachmann OO Gauge Train Sets		Our Price
Digital sets allow you to run multiple locos at the same time on the same track, all from one controller. The locos receive a signal from the controller (via the track) which tells them what speed to move at and in what direction. The result of this is that you can run multiple locos at different speeds on the same rail! Bachmann and Hornby systems both adhere to the DCC standard - this means that the Bachmann controller will run trains fitted with Hornby DCC chips and vice-versa. Track is identical in both makes of sets. The Bachmann controller is slightly simpler in operation as it only allows for 9 locos to be used at any one time (the Hornby one allows for many more - although how many you'd actually want to use is open to debate!
IMPORTANT BEFORE PURCHASE: Digital sets require digital locos - standard locos or those marked "DCC ready" are not able to run until a chip has been fitted. On "DCC Ready" locos, it's a case of plugging the chip in, on others you have to modify the loco and solder the chip in. Chips from both brands (interchangeable) are under £10. 30-041 Bachmann Digital Starter Set 2 £109 This set is manufactured by Bachmann. The track, train and controller are 100% compatible with the Hornby equivalents. This is an interesting new system which allows two trains to run simultaneously at different speeds on the same track! The set includes a digital controller and two complete small freight trains with wagons etc. Most DCC ready locos can be fitted with chips enabling them to run with this new system and further controllers are available if required. The track is identical to the Starter Oval plus extension R8010 Track Pack A to provide a siding. Extend the layout with extra R8016 Track Packs B and on (or loose track) as time goes by.		£109 In Stock
The Hornby Digital Set Series Hornby R1126 Mixed Freight DIGITAL £168 You can really see the benefits of Digital Control once this set is assembled. Each of the two locomotives has a decoder factory fitted and are immediately ready for operation. Independent control is guaranteed for each loco even though they may both be on the same track. When the powerful diesel locomotive is coupled to the four wagons included with the set, the Class 08 diesel can then pull them round the circuit just stopping in front of the little 0-6-0 'Jinty'. The 'Jinty' can then be reversed carefully so that it couples to the front of the 08. Then by programming the engines to work in unison the double headed train can move off down the track. NOTE: This is Hornby's new Digital System which allows more control to the loco, and allows multiple locos to run at the same time on the same line of track.
